Answers to frequently asked questions about applied explosion protection
The development of the ExProtect software was based on the findings of an extensive investigation carried out by FSA regarding the mechanics of explosion doors and lids. The user-friendly software makes the findings accessible to food industry operators and designers. The regulary updated software consists of five modules SIMEK, STS, Vent, Vessel and BeVent.
SIMEK calculates the time dependent force course which acts at the hinges ropes of the explosion doors and lids during the venting process of silos or vessels. (Fig. 1). Afterwards a subroutine offers the possibility to adjust the hinges or the steel cables according to the occurring load. In case the venting device is weakly anchoring (demolition) the trajectories of these elements can be calculated. Furthermore it calculates the venting capability of the venting device, the reduced overpressure and the reduced rate of pressure rise.
STS calculates the most likely and the maximum flight range of debris when large parts of buildings or vessels are destroyed by the effects of dust explosions. Fig. 2 shows the input window of STS. In this example of a cylindrical vessel the yellow illustrated surface is blasted out from the vessel wall.
Vent is designed for the calculation of pressure venting areas or reduced overpressures in explosion hazardous rooms and silos (Figure 3). The calculation methods are based on formulas known from relevant literature.

Version 5
The tried and proven software has been re-designed and extended. The version 5 contains calculation methods according to the latest standards as well as guidelines, a new volume designer and a new module, designed for the dimensioning of pressure venting reliefs of bucket elevators.
